MGS Database Announced

19 06 2008

Interactive compendium coming with next PSN update.

June 18, 2008 – Perhaps you’ve played through the first three Metal Gear Solid games, but still have questions and haven’t had a chance to play Metal Gear Solid 4. Then again, maybe you’ve blasted through MGS4 and don’t fully remember all of the characters and who’s connected to what person in the mythology. Don’t you fear, because Konami and Sony are going to be releasing a huge amount of information related to this massive universe in a rather creative way. On the Playstation.Blog, Brandon Laurino from Konami Online stated that the MGS4 Database will be launched tomorrow, June 19th as part of the PSN update. A free downloadable application, it features information relating to all aspects of the franchise. As Laurino said in his post, the database will include, “complete storylines, character profiles, relationship diagrams, and much more!”

Obviously, this would be an excellent way to augment any knowledge of the previous games, which is a great addition for fans. However, the MGS4 Database will also contain MGS4 spoilers with easter eggs and other hints. However, if you haven’t beaten the title yet, players don’t need to worry about spoilers, because the Database will read your save files and black out these spoilers until you’ve beaten the game once.

Laurino ended his post by highlighting that this was only one of a number of downloadable extras that Konami plans on releasing with MGS4, noting that a new camouflage pattern and iPod song have already been released, and that more was on the way.

Another big PS3 exclusive?

15 04 2008

Just this morning I opened up my email, to find a decent scoop on some industry happenings that involve our favorite console.

Apparently, Konami is very pleased with the way Sony is handling the hype for MGS4, along with being pleased the PS3 is picking up steam at such a fast rate.

Its always good to please a big developer/publisher, it usually means more support, and more exclusive content for the respective console.   Thats exactly what is happening right now.

Word is, Konami is working on a new 3D Castlevania exclusive to the PS3.  Konami is hoping to take advantage of the cell, to create the first hugely successful Castelvania in 3D…

From an inteveiw with Igarashi

“Do you think you’ll do another fully 3D Castlevania? God of War seems like the closest to a 3D Castlevania to me.

KI: Yeah, I hate to lose, and it’s very frustrating. One thing I definitely want to do is to see the franchise realized in 3D.

To take revenge?

KI: Yeah! (laughs)”

SCEE announces next PSN Store update, including MGO beta [UPDATE]

11 04 2008

SCEE has confirmed that the PSN Store redesign will be going live on April 15th. It has also been revealed that the European Store won’t get updated until Thursday the 17th, but it should be worth the wait. A list of upcoming content was included in the press release, including the Metal Gear Online beta. From the looks of things, it’ll be an open beta for anyone who wants to take part, unlike in the US or Japan where beta keys were handed out with Metal Gear Solid 4 preorders. Here’s what we can expect to see next Thursday:

  • Metal Gear Online Premiere Beta
  • Warhawk: Operation Broken Mirror expansion
  • Lair “Diabolical Dragons” pack
  • Lair “Skyguard Upgrade” pack
  • “A collection of trailers including the latest for GTA IV
  • Sega Superstar Tennis demo

Looks like that “special update” we were promised was pointing towards the MGO beta. Nice to see Europe not getting shafted in the end — in fact, they get the best deal. A seemingly open beta. We’re not sure whether the content listed above is exhaustive, but assume for now that it is. We’ll let you know if we find out otherwise.

[UPDATE] Konami has confirmed that the beta will be completely open and will last between April 21st and May 6th. After May 6th the beta client will be removed from the PSN Store.

The only negative point I can say about this update is that the Beta will open up four days after the release. Oh well atleast Europe isn’t treated like crap this time 😉

11 04 2008

Konami today announced their plans for the European Metal Gear Online beta. The beta will be available to everyone from the PlayStaton Store starting on April 17, 2008 and will be playable from April 21 to May 6. The beta will feature the two maps “Blood Bath” and “Groznyi Grad”, which will have you strategically thinking in order to obtain victory. View the full press release below.

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH announced Metal Gear Online Premiere Beta for Kojima Productions’ online epic

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced its plans for a public beta program across Europe for its forthcoming Metal Gear Online title for PLAYSTATION®3. Konami will release Metal Gear Online Premiere Beta via the PlayStation Store from April 17th, with online tests running from April 21st through May 6th. An all-new Metal Gear title specifically designed as a multi-player online experience, Metal Gear Online will be released worldwide as part of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on June 12th.

The beta program will offer players a unique chance to sample the innovative multi-player experience of Metal Gear Online, which emphasizes cooperative team-based play. Those downloading the beta will be invited to explore two maps – “Blood Bath” and “Groznyi Grad” – each of which requires unique strategies in order to achieve victory.

Metal Gear Online will launch as part of Guns of the Patriots in June as a Starter Pack, comprising five unique stages: “Ambush Alley,” where trenches and sandbags litter an arena built for close and medium range combat; “Blood Bath,” a two-tier battle setting; and “Groznyi Grad,” the expansive Shagohod development complex from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater which features human catapults that propel players to different areas of the environment. Rounding out the five stage set are the dusty, Middle Eastern alleyways found in Guns of the Patriots entitled “Midtown Maelstrom,” and the rooftop settings of “Urban Ultimatum.” Konami is committed to the release of additional Expansion Packs to be released throughout the year.

Up to 16 people can play simultaneously, with game worlds created using Guns of the Patriots’s incredible 3D engine. Retaining the classic stealth combat gameplay of the Metal Gear series, players are dropped in a series of war zones wherein different challenges await. Five game modes await players on stages that span the globe and the history of MGS: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture and Base and Sneaking missions.
